Ukrainian Woman by Andres Gonzalez

I have been photographing Ukrainian winters on and off since 2005. The alchemy of history, landscape and season had seduced me early on, and I returned over and over to photograph my experiences, and the experiences of people I met on my travels. In 2009 I met Sasha, an artist and curator in Kyiv, who introduced me to a different Ukraine, gone was the soviet repression, but a Ukraine inspired and connected to the far reaches of the world. It was through this meeting that collaboration has sparked, to explore Ukrainian culture through the prism of femininity, a source of great inspiration for many artists. The idea was to throw a photo shoot, but it would turn into more than that - it was a happening, a performance, and we were all players; it was our life, a unity, a photography, an art, a dance, a sensuality. That little party inspired this whole project, this tip of the hat to our women.

Починаючи з 2005 року, я фотографував українські зими. Алхімія історії, ландшафту та пора року спокусила мене з самого початку, і я повертався знову і знов, щоб сфотографувати свої власні і переживання інших людей, які зустрічалися під час моїх подорожей. У 2009 році у Києві я зустрів Сашу, митця та куратора, який показав мені іншу Україну – без радянського тягаря, повну сил та зв’язану з найвіддаленішими куточками світу. Після цієї зустрічі почалася наша співпраця – можливість пізнати українську культуру через призму жіночності, що слугує джерелом натхнення для багатьох митців. Ідея організувати фотосесію перетворилася на щось набагато більше – хеппенінг, виставу, і ми всі були гравцями, життям, єдиним цілим, фотографією, мистецтвом, танцем, чуттєвістю. Та невелика вечірка ініціювала весь проект. Це вдячність нашим жінкам
