Turkish Woman by Rengim Mutevellioglu

Turkish women are neither modern in the Western sense nor traditional and deeply rooted to their customs as it might seem. Turkish women whether they are being young or old, educated or illiterate, Muslim, Christian or Jewish, all share a common sense of unity with each other. However this unity is not always a harmonious unity, the relations they keep with each other, especially with women they don’t know is usually cold and distant. But they’re never alone, most Turkish women, especially the new generation, will try to distance themselves from others, only to find that they’ve been dubbed and the untold presence of an other women, should it be a mother or a friend, always lurks close to them. Especially in today’s buzzing metropolitan world of hard competition where every man or woman has to defend him/herself, the Turkish women have to work extra hard not to fall into the web of crowds created by the women community. To be alone, to escape from the others, we can only hope for it to happen, but when the time comes, when we grow, when I grow, I know there will be a crowd of women, whether hating me or welcoming me with open arms as soon as I stop trying to hide. Someone will always acknowledge my presence; I will never be truly alone, because I am a Turkish woman.

Турецькі жінки не є сучасними з точки зору західноєвропейського світогляду. Проте вони не настільки консервативні і вірні своїм звичаям, як це може здаватися на перший погляд. Незважаючи на вік, освіченість і віросповідання, всі туркені мають почуття єдності одна з одною. Однак ця єдність не завжди гармонійна, а самі взаємини, особливо незнайомок, часто прохолодні та відчужені. І все ж жінки ніколи не бувають самотні. Більшість з них намагається відокремитися, лише щоб зрозуміти, що постійно перебувають у товаристві матері чи то подруг, які весь час слідують по п’ятах. У сучасному хаотичному, космополітичному світі жорсткої конкуренції, де кожна людина мусить себе захищати, турецька жінка має докладати більше зусиль, аби не загубитися у вирі сірого натовпу, створеного жіночими спільнотами. Можна лише сподіватися на можливість сховатися чи втекти від цього. Та коли прийде час і я виросту, мене оточуватиме величезна кількість жінок, які будуть чи то ненавидіти мене, чи то зустрічати з відкритими обіймами, щойно я відмовлюся від спроб заховатися. Хтось завжди буде підтримувати моє існування і я ніколи не буду по-справжньому самотньою, тому що я - туркеня.
