Chinese Woman in Canada by Steven Beckly

The women in these photographs were told that they were being photographed for two reasons: 1) they were women; 2) they shared a nationality. In addition, they were put into specific poses and positions and instructed to convey no emotion to simplify their responsibilities. The goal, ultimately, was to reveal (and capture) the naturalness of their nationality and femininity through the stabilization of their bodies and in their emotionless states. The women in these photographs share the same Chinese heritage. Their histories are rooted in the East. They are also bonded by the fact that they all live in a Western society, some first generation immigrants, others not. Whatever their personal histories, they all share a common task of having to negotiate their personal identities through these two disparate lenses. These photographs explore the cultural contexts of these women and seek to question what meaning their overlapping histories/stories may have for them, and for the viewer.

Жінкам на цих фотографіях сказали, що їх фотографують з двох причин: 1) вони – представниці прекрасної половини людства; 2) належать до однієї національності. Їх посадили у певному положенні і попросили не передавати жодних емоцій, щоб знизити ступінь відповідальності. Адже метою було викрити (та сфотографувати) природність їхньої національності та жіночності шляхом фіксації позиції тіл та емоційного стану. Ці жінки, чиї життєві історії починаються на Сході, поділяють однакову китайську спадщину. Всі вони живуть у західному суспільстві, деякі з них є першим поколінням іммігрантів. Якими не були б їхні особисті історії, перед кожною з них стоїть одне завдання – узгодження своєї ідентичності крізь ці два різні об’єктиви. Фото зображують культурні контексти цих жінок і допомагають зрозуміти, яке значення може мати їхня спільна історія чи історії для них самих та глядачів.
