Israeli Woman by Sigal Ben David
The series assembles three works, representing three generations of women as an equivalent to "dream", "the present" and "memory". Each work contemplates on one generation of women in Israel in a visual form. Both allegorical and empirical concepts define each generation, as well as the dialogue among the three. The third generation, older women, is presented by objects that are taking place in our life as a conception that form us as young women in the present. We grow up on the stories and myths of our mothers - "the holocaust survivors" "the pioneers" "the immigrants". The Holocaust memories nurture the militant culture. What we truly have from this older generation are memories, fine line between nostalgia and disappointment. The objects are a reflection of a residue, remains of fragmented dreams and beliefs. These dreams and beliefs were constructed in the Israeli society and are still vital within the young generation. The Israeli girl's dream is not just the classic universal dream of a white wedding dress, but also has a distinct local component, which might seem to an outsider as a contradiction - to become a soldier. The portraits of my generation reflect the conflict that young Israeli women cope with. Both dreams and memory define our perception of ourselves. In some portraits the floral pattern background correlates with the romantic conservative role, while in others it portrays dissonant relations, a constant tension between adaptation and disillusionment. The photographs function as a representation of presentation, imitating what might be considered as the reality of women in Israel as both idea and ideal.

Ця серія поєднує три роботи, що репрезентують три покоління жінок як еквівалент «мрії», «сьогодення» та «пам’яті». Кожна фотографія у візуальній формі розмірковує про одне покоління жінок в Ізраїлі. Алегоричні та емпіричні концепти визначають кожне покоління, так само, як і діалог між трьома.
Третє покоління, тобто жінки похилого віку, репрезентовані об’єктами, що існують у нашому житті як концепція того, що вони формують нас, молодих жінок, сьогодні. Ми зростаємо на історіях та міфах наших матерів – «очевидці Голокосту», «першопрохідці», «іммігранти». Спогади про Голокост живлять мілітаристську культуру. Що ми справді успадкували від старшого покоління, так це спогади. Межа між ностальгією та розчаруванням ледве помітна. Об’єкти є відображенням залишків непов’язаних мрій та вірувань. Вони давно були сформовані в ізраїльському суспільстві й досі є актуальними для молодого покоління. Мрія ізраїльської дівчинки - це не просто типова, універсальна мрія про весілля. Вона містить дуже виразний місцевий компонент, який іноземцю може здатися протиріччям. Ця мрія – стати солдатом. Портрети мого покоління відображають конфлікт, з яким ізраїльські жінки мусять впоратися. І мрії, і спогади визначають наше сприйняття самих себе. На деяких фотографіях квітковий візерунок на задньому плані перегукується з романтичною, консервативною роллю, тим часом як на інших портретах це зображує дисонанс, постійне напруження, що балансує між адаптацією та крахом ілюзій. Фотографії є представленням уявлення, імітуючи те, що можна розглядати як реальність жінок в Ізраїлі як ідею та ідеал.
