Italian Woman by Flavio Romualdo Garofano

Photobucket

Flavio Romualdo Garofano presents a series of shots where the contrast and an attempt to compare real life to the theater are evident. With his portraits of Italian women the artist tries to draw viewers’ attention to this contrast and comparison. The "new" women, women of the new generation express their emancipation using the body language. This body can be painted in colours, be on display, become "elevated" ... Their faces look into the future, like the eyes of a newborn who tries to learn this world. Thus we can say that young women play in their own future the main, the leading role. Older women have different approach to life. For all bad things that happen they still “blame the authorities”.

On the other hand we see pictures taken in Southern Italy, pictures of simple women – worker, farmer, housewife… These women are like "pillars" for their homes. Women who have no time to sit down and relax, who work 24 hours a day, wake up early, say a prayer, then sweep the floor, cook, guard house - in their same old kitchen aprons. And let’s praise these women – because they struggle to “get by” with the same feeling of fighting for the future as young do.

Israeli Woman by Sigal Ben David

Photobucket

The series assembles three works, representing three generations of women as an equivalent to "dream", "the present" and "memory". Each work contemplates on one generation of women in Israel in a visual form. Both allegorical and empirical concepts define each generation, as well as the dialogue among the three. The third generation, older women, is presented by objects that are taking place in our life as a conception that form us as young women in the present. We grow up on the stories and myths of our mothers - "the holocaust survivors" "the pioneers" "the immigrants". The Holocaust memories nurture the militant culture. What we truly have from this older generation are memories, fine line between nostalgia and disappointment. The objects are a reflection of a residue, remains of fragmented dreams and beliefs. These dreams and beliefs were constructed in the Israeli society and are still vital within the young generation. The Israeli girl's dream is not just the classic universal dream of a white wedding dress, but also has a distinct local component, which might seem to an outsider as a contradiction - to become a soldier. The portraits of my generation reflect the conflict that young Israeli women cope with. Both dreams and memory define our perception of ourselves. In some portraits the floral pattern background correlates with the romantic conservative role, while in others it portrays dissonant relations, a constant tension between adaptation and disillusionment. The photographs function as a representation of presentation, imitating what might be considered as the reality of women in Israel as both idea and ideal.

Jazzbaby, poem by Sofiya Andruhovych

It’s warm in the white room
Water makes noise in a pipe
World’s covered with snow
Loneliness is all around –
This nu jazz, this bebop,
This Ah-Ah.
Undressed after rest,
It would be right best
Not to come for this guest
Who’s constantly strange,
It’s not gonna change.
Because of this pest
You seek some new nest,
Or else you’ll go out of your mind,
Or else they’ll endeavour to find
The network in which you were signed.
Good whisky will conquer your stress,
Drink some spirit, you pretty,
Very soon you’ll anew become witty.
Go ahead, there’s again a new city
Where your voice surely won’t sound fitty.
And all over again – sheds and cellars.
What are you doing to heart and to brain?
You’re making feel pain
Cutting like trees with fellers.
Oh God, please save us!
And they can’t come to grips
With this voice from your lips,
They can see the pink nips
Your shirt covers no more.
Your blood’s made of jazzcore,
The sea in your lungs has no shore
The cocktail made of alcohol plus ozone,
Of chlorine, glass and iron ore.
These people seem to you so sore.
These people will drown in you,
They’re touching each other’s thighs,
Groaning, and holding each other tight.
You’re rubbing your blue temples,
The night will distress,
These ears need caress –
Without it you’re mess.
The rhythm knocked by your pulse
Is regular railroad’s groove,
You’re watching black houses move.
Brakes’ growling
Sounds like water pipe’s bawling.
One more new station appears,
In the distance it will loom;
One more empty hotel room.
And if you left your God, not your purse,
God’s very hard to exhume.
It would have been even worse, of course,
If you had ceased to converse.
There is not a moment to lose,
So put on your silvery shoes,
That’s you over whom I enthuse!
As pretty as picture you are,
Despite being silent you’re star,
You’re not “on” so far
But you’ll turn them off
You’ll tear them to syncopes,
Tear them to ribbons
These piteous gibbons.
You’ve got to make old bones
In Europe’s night clubs.
Show them your swing
Sing for them poker
You’re a hard bop fakir
You’re creative joker.
Babe, it’s night, you fell asleep
Near the person who can keep
All your secrets very deep,
Who moreover smells of mocha,
Whose eyewinkers came unstuck,
Who is crying, so good luck,
Don’t forget him/her, don’t tuck
It away
‘Cause it may
Be too harsh.
She’s a travesty star,
Quirky girl called Tamar.
All her being is false
Except for heart.
She was playing her part
Saying don’t be upset,
Though we’ll soon drift apart
I know you won’t forget!
‘Cause tomorrow you’ll sing somewhere else
And it’s hard.
How unattainable you are.
‘Cause I saw you shaking the hand of Bobby McFerrin,
That’s for sure not the life I have share in.
In this moment your dream is so fairy
‘Bout your being not alone,
‘Bout your final coming back home
Where it’s winter and you’re recognized,
The word fusion isn’t popularized.
When on Christmas Eve going to church
You can find of what you’re not in search.
Lighting candle for your grandpa’s health
You’ll obtain this superlative wealth:
Getting rid of your permanent grief
And you’ll see, this long hoped-for relief
Just resembles the snow which, in brief,
Covers the fidgety river with shawl,
Talks to the pine trees and fondles them all.
Stars looking out of lowering clouds
Hope not to fall

American Woman by Allan Barnes

I am working using the wet-plate collision process, which gives this “old” effect to the film. This method was widely used in 1850-1870. The pictures you see here were taken using a reproduction camera and Voigtlander & Sohn lens manufactured in 1856. The concept was actually simple. I put an ad on Craigslist Los Angeles saying that I am looking for 3 generations of females for the project. I got two responses, both families came to my studio to be photographed and then I photo-shopped the pictures together into a triptych. So this submission represents 3 generations of American Women. As they say, we are the nation made of people of many nations; this is particularly noticeable in the big cities like Los Angeles, where to hear several different languages spoken in the cafe is a common thing. In fact, the guy who served me coffee at my local coffee shop (where I’ve sent the images from) speaks English, Farsi and Norwegian. I think that pictures submitted can give a full idea of this.

I settle in Australia for 2 years. This still journey gives me the time to gather with a lot of people and go through the “australianity”. Carrying a lot of different faces, a lot of different stories, Australia where everything is possible with the dash of "easy-goingness" add to the everyday life. The Australian culture seems to be still under construction. I tried to capture the faces of the women who have built this new country or are about to change it. They were or are all involved in art, fashion, politics, ecology and social life. All those pictures have been taken in New South Wales in the Sydney Greater Area (Redfern, Surry Hills, Helensburg and Newcastle) in October 2009.

Swedish Woman by Tea Shafie

Photobucket
The key elements that I’ve tried to capture in my portraits of the Swedish woman are independence, achievements, loneliness, strength, delicacy, simplicity, anticipation and aspiration. I believe all women around the world possess these qualities but in differ- ent ways. Throughout the life, these qualities leave scars, some of which are visible and some are impossible for the naked eye to see.
